Umpqua River Winter Steelhead

2/15/2015

Spent the last couple days chasing chrome steelhead up on the South Umpqua. There was a fair amount of pressure but with some laid back guests we were able to get a little later start and fish behind the pack. Other than running plugs in only a couple of spots we focused on drift fishing yarn and steelhead roe. The shrimp pink, baby pink, and orange and white yarnies all paid off at some point one being more productive than the others. Water levels were perfect both Friday and Saturday although it was a little lower Saturday causing a switch to 6 shot slinky weights from 7 shot slinky weights. The south will continue to fish great for another week or so before it gets to low and clear. We do offer multi-day fishing trips on the Umpqua with lodging at Seven Feathers Casino included. Please give us a call if you would like to book some dates.

Rogue River Winter Steelhead

The Rogue River is in great shape. After a couple weeks of muddy water, it is now a nice steelhead green. With flows around 3000 cfs below Grants Pass we have been picking up some good numbers of nice bright winter fish. The go to technique is drift fishing shrimp pink yarn flies with a #4 hook and a little dime size bit of steelhead roe. Fishin Oregon Guide Service offers 4, 6, & 8 hour drift boat trips. If you want the chance to hook multiple steelhead in a day, now is the time to book your trip.

UMPQUA WINTER STEELHEAD

The Rogue River is still high and muddy but the South Umpqua River is in great shape. Drift fishing is the technique. If you have not drift fished before, you should know it is a fun and active way to catch steelhead. We use top of the line gear to give you the best chance for an exciting battle with the fish of a life time. Umpqua steelhead average around 8 pounds with much larger fish caught on occasion. We are only about a week into Steelhead season on the Umpqua and fishing will continue to pick up as the season moves on. Steelhead fishing on the Umpqua starts slowing down in April. Remember our comfortable drift boats have forced air propane heaters to help keep you warm on these cool winter mornings. Contact us for more info or lodging accommodations for multiple day fishing trips.

2014 WINTER STEELHEAD SEASON

1/12/2014

Winter Steelhead season is here. It is the second week of the new year and we finally have gotten some rain in our Southern Oregon Steelhead rivers. The past month most anglers have been targeting these fresh fish down stream near the coast. Both the Umpqua River and the Rogue River have been seeing good numbers of fish. This small but much needed flush of rain water will get these fish moving up into our fishing grounds. Our most productive techniques for this time of year are side drifting cured roe and running plugs above the breaks. We are using 9' 6-10 lb Lamiglas noodle rods for drift fishing and 7'6" 10-15 lb Lamiglas plug rods. These are top of the line rods that give you a great feel while fighting the fish and are sensitive enough to feel the bite. We have some great dates available later this month for both the Umpqua River System and our home waters here on the Rogue River. We also have some lodging packages available for multi day fishing trips.

We are still catching good numbers of Steelhead and a few Coho Salmon on the Rogue River. We have been having success on Flies, Roe, and plugs. Black and Crome Brads Wee Wiggler being a Steelhead favorite.
Low water on the Oregon Coast put a hold on Late Fall Chinook but recent rains have revived the season. There are still some available dates for the Chetco, Elk, and Sixes.
We are also currently filling remaining dates for Winter Steelhead on both Rogue and Umpqua Rivers. Join us for world class Steelhead fishing, going for big fish with light tackle.  Our  heated drift boats will help keep you comfortable on these cool winter trips. Adrinaline pumping cromers peeling line also help keep your temperature up.  Please call for info and remaining available dates.

Rogue River Canyon 2012

It took me a while to update but we had the best fishing this fall that I have ever seen on the Lower Rogue Canyon. We spent most of September and October running four day lodge fishing trips and had great success with both huge hard fighting Chinook Salmon and many nice big chrome Steelhead.  Lets just say that we did not have a shortage of fish for lunch,  with fresh fish tacos on day two and alder smoked bbq fish for day three we were eatin good. Most of the Chinook action was on big flatfish style plugs and most of the stealhead action was on flies, plugs, and bait. We cover almost 62 miles on this trip so we have an oppertunity to fish many different techniques based on the conditions and what we are targeting. We do have a couple of dates open for next fall, so give us a call for a trip of a lifetime.

Winter Steelhead on the Rogue!

4/16/2012

Even though it has been raining non-stop the past few weeks the Steelhead fishing has been great on the Upper Rogue River. There have been some nice crome hatchery fish finding their way to the net. If you are going out on your own steelhead fishing remember that you are allowed one Native Steelhead a day as long as it is over 24" long and only five Natives a season. This special regulation ends as of April 30th. The bite has been hot on the new Yakima Baits "Mag Lip 3.5" in a variety of colors. It seems to dive a little deeper in these higher flows we have been seeing lately.

We will be fishing for Steelies until they stop bitting but the bonus is that we will also start catching some nice bright Spring Chinook. We have some great dates available starting May 1st for Spring Chinook.

ROGUE RIVER FISHING REPORT

We boated our biggest Spring Chinook ever today up near the Cole Rivers Fish Hatchery on the Rogue River. 69lb bright crome King. This is looking to be a great start to the springer season. We got the hog trolling a plug cut herring cured in CHEETO'S powder with a night crawer wrap. It was a long 2 hour battle but we won and were able to beach the big fish just before our 6lb leader snapped. APRIL FOOLS!
Right now the water is high and muddy but still fishable at the top of the Rogue River. We have been picking up fish on plugs and side drifting roe and Yarn. Once the water drops toward the end of the week . There should be some great fishing all throughout the river. The Umpqua should see a few more weeks of good winter steelhead fishing aswell once the water drops. We havn't seen any Spring Chinook in the Upper Rogue yet but any day now. We still have some great dates available for the Spring Chinook Season. Give us a call to book a trip or if you have any
other questions.
