FISH ON! We are seeing some of the best fishing in years. There are Chinook Salmon and Summer Run steelhead all through the Rogue River. The Chinooks are ranging from 20 to 30lbs, with the occasional HOG! One of my guests Annie From St. Louis Caught this 38lb King on a K16 Kwikfish.(see photo) There are also some cromed out Steelhead in the river ranging from a couple pounds up to 12lbs with the occasonal HOG! We have been picking the Steelies up on Wiggle Wart Plugs, K9 Kwikfish, Roe, and Night Crawlers. As of right now you are aloud to keep Salmon Below Dodge Bridge but that changes as of the first of the month.

Sorry I have not kept up with my reports. I have been spending to much time on the river and not enough on the computer. Today we boated 4 steelhead ranging from 6 to 12 pounds. We also missed another 4. No Salmon today. The trout and stealhead are hitting on salmon eggs, night crawlers, and plugs. We were able to hook up with two Chinooks on Thursday between the hatchery and Rogue Elk Park. You can now keep wild chinooks below Dodge bridge on the Rogue River.

The springers are in the Upper River as well as some great Steelhead fishing. We just got a great flush of rain and are actually looking like we are on track for the water year with a late spring. Sardine wrapped quick fish and back bouncing roe are the hot tickets. The Steelies are all over the night crawlers and yarnies. This is looking to be the best Spring and Summer Season on the Rogue in over 5 years. We are also going to get in some great Small Mouth fishing on the Umpqua and John Day Rivers. This is going to be the last Spring to fish for Salmon below Gold Ray Dam. Since it is going to be removed by the end of the Summer.

Did a half day fishing trip on the Rogue today. We landed three beauties. Two natives and one hatchery. You are able to tag one native steelhead a day five each season. We had a couple others on that we could not get to stick. The conditions are great right now and the fish are in the river.

Winter Steelhead are in the rivers and the conditions are perfect. I was up on the Umpqua on Saturday and we were able to boat 5 out of the 9 Steelhead that we got on. These were extremely hot fish averaging in the 10lbs range. We landed on around 15lbs. and another one of our boats had one that was pushing 20lbs. All the fish caught on Saturday were natives. The Umpqua will be fishing good through March and we still have dates available. We were fishing the Rogue yesterday for just a half day and were able to boat 3 out of the 5 that we had on. We also caught a number of nice Rainbow Trout. There are fish in both systems and we would be happy to get you out there. Give us a call if you have any questions or would like to book a trip. All our drift boats have built in heaters for those cold winter days!
TIP: Winter Steelhead love to bite a size 4 octopus hook tied on a 24 inch leader with a bait loop. It helps if there is a little bit of PINK yarn and roe involved. |
